podzemlje pece
european museum of the year

Podzemlje Pece - tourist mine and museum was nominated for the European Museum Year Award 2007!

Deep under the earth surface, where the dwarfs are said to enjoy in their dancing, started the centuries - long path of hardship, deeply overwhelmed by blisters and impregnated by sweat of numerous miners. Posing silently and motionlessly for a moment, you may be lucky enough to experience, in the darkness of the shaft, the sight of the of a frightful creature, the so called" bergmandelc" and you may hear the sounds of hammers and picks of the lost souls of miners, etc.
This is where the underworld of Peca opens itself to the visitors.
As early as the Roman empire, rich ore deposits were discovered between Peca and Uršlja gora, while the first written records about the lead ore exploitation date from the year 1665. This year is considered to be the actual beginning of lead mining in our Koroška region.
Long years of mining and the expansion of the lead mine have put a special impact on the people and the environment in this part of Slovenia at the foot of the Karavanke.
The traces of the mining in the heart of the Peca mountain will be revealed to you after a 3.5 km long ride with an authentic train in the Glanènik shaft. You will get off the train at Moring, from where you will be taken on a guided walking tour through the tunnels and the history of mining, from its early beginning to the present days, will be explained to you. You will be able to admire the rich heritage of the mining tools and thus create an adequate picture of what a working day of our miners used to look like.
If you wish to know more about the working conditions of miners, about the mysterious world under mighty Peca, or if you long to become a miner for at least two hours, feel welcome to visit us in our mine.
